A land of passage
Discover the Hautes-Alpes department, a jewel of contrasts between plains and mountains, offering exceptional terrain for sporting challenges. Since 1922, more than 80 stages of the Tour de France have left their mark on this unique landscape.
Gap hosted the Tour for the first time in 1931, on the 15th stage from Nice to the Hautes-Alpes prefecture. Antonin Magne, wearing the Yellow Jersey, triumphed over Jef Demuysere, despite winning the stage.
This historic passage in 1931 was the precursor to many other visits by the Tour to the Gap Tallard Vallées region.
The 106th edition of the Tour de France was won by Colombian rider Egan Bernal, also marking the fiftieth anniversary of Belgian racing legend Eddy Merckx's first victory.

In 2024 no fewer than 3 stages will pass through the Hautes-Alpes.
The town of Gap will once again be the starting town for the Gap → Barcellonnette stage, which will take place on July 18 during the 18th stage of this new edition of the Grande Boucle.

Lance Armstrong, La Rochette
In 2003, just 5 km from the finish in Gap, a memorable incident occurred. The stifling heat of that fine July day had deformed the road surface, causing rider Cjoseba Beloki to crash on the descent of the Col de La Rochette. Lance Armstrong, racing at full speed right behind him, miraculously avoided the collision and ended up crossing a field.
This anecdote left an indelible mark on the 2003 Tour de France, etched in the memories of spectators and cycling enthusiasts alike.
